Past Work on Site

The Road Oiling Site (IRP Site SS009) includes the roads in the main section of the Galena AFS, specifically in the vicinity of the Birchwood Hangar, the fire station, the headquarters building, and the base chapel that were reported to have used oil applied to them for dust suppression. It was identified and investigated as part of the Site Investigation performed in 1992 and is documented in the Final Site Investigation Report, Galena AFS (WCC 1993). The site appears to have been identified anecdotally, based on a statement in the report that "Liquid wastes generated by the facility are reported to have been applied to local roads as dust control until 1984." This site was originally called Campion Road Oiling, but through the record search, it is clear that the oiling was on the main part of the Galena AFS.
